Conscription rule is enforced by Myanmar's military government

As the unrest in Myanmar continues, the government has said that all young men and women will have to serve in the military.

In February 2021, the army took over from the civilian government in a coup.

But in the past few months, it has lost a number of fights with ethnic groups and anti-coup fighters.

As of Saturday, all men and women between the ages of 18 and 35 will have to serve in the military for at least two years.

No new information has been made public. But the junta said in a statement that its defense ministry would "make public all the necessary rules, laws, announcements, orders, notifications, and instructions."

In the past few months, the military has lost a lot of embarrassing battles.

At the end of last year, three ethnic insurgent armies in Shan State took over border points and roads that carried most of the trade with China. They did this with the help of other armed groups that are against the government.

The Arakan Army (AA) said last month that it had taken over Paletwa in Chin State and the hilltop camp at Meewa, which was the last military post in Paletwa township.

Myint Swe, the president of Myanmar who was installed by the military and is a former general, has said that the country could fall apart if the government can't stop the killing.

Myanmar passed a rule in 2010 that lets people be forced to serve in the military, but it hasn't been used yet.

The law says that during a state of emergency, the terms of service can be expanded for up to five years. People who don't show up for their court dates can be jailed for the same amount of time.

The junta of the country declared a state of emergency in 2021, and it was just extended for another six months.

Before it became a democracy in 2011, Myanmar had been ruled by harsh military governments for almost 50 years.

The military said it had taken over the country on February 1, 2021.

Since then, there has been chaos and war in the country, which has forced more than a million people to leave their homes and killed thousands.

The army's recent battles with ethnic armed groups have been bad, with some defeats and retreats. This has made people who back the army doubt and criticize it.
